Over the years I realize the same action can be done with various frames of mind. For the sake of motivation, I find it best to shape thoughts or frame of reference in a manner which that lines us best with my own mental reality, my home base or territory where my mind tends to reside. I find going too far outside of the bounds of what I consider my core will result in massive amounts of resistance from within.
I find anything deemed compulsory, or the use of fear, guilt, embarrassment, and shame results in a state where I am at constant odds with myself. The use of force, or anything that goes against my perceive sense of autonomy will result in backlash. It is best if I can frame an action in a manner where I can clearly identity a sense of fulfillment from engaging in the action. If I believe that an action will ultimately add enrichment to my life, I am more willing. If I can find something within the action that I find enjoyable (it could be the fun from the challenge or exploration, it can be the pleasure of doing the thing itself, it can be how I feel during or after, etc) I am going to want to continually engage, seeking more enjoyment each time.
Overall I find I am so locked into my fishbowl that I have to find ways of dealing with my fishbowl. I have to adapt to the foundation of what is already there in order to create new pathways and changes.
